COMPLICATIONS.
WHAT IF ...?
All the diabetes books, pamphlets and internet
sites talk about “prevention” but there is a taboo on
discussing what it’s like to experience complications.
A new comprehensive interview and article, commissioned by Reality
Check, aims to expose some of the myths surrounding complications
and share the insights of some of the young adults who have not only
coped but have conquered and transcended complications.

GOOD DOCTORS?
It's the eternal search really. To find a doctor with whom you can
communicate effectively, who is up to date with everything but also
in tune with what you need and when. (Makes finding the love of your
life sound easy!) Opinions vary widely but where do you start? Word
of mouth is very popular but in this busy world, we've taken word
of mouth online.
Reality Check has just published on our website the beginings of a
directory of health professional which you the people have told us
are all good, for many and varied reasons.
The list is by no means comprehensive, and Reality Check very warmly
welcomes your comments or contributions!

now with any additions of your own. Thanks!
LANTUS/GLARGINE INSULIN AVAILABILITY IN AUSTRALIA
Before you get too excited it's not on the PBS or anything so is still
expensive!!
But easier and cheaper to get as of 1 March 2004 than buying from
Germany which was the only previous option.
LANTUS® is a new once-a-day insulin for people with type 1 or
type 2 diabetes - now available as a private prescription product
to patients in Australia.
This is the first insulin to offer peakless insulin levels throughout
the entire day for most users.
Information from the maker, Aventis:
• LANTUS is not listed on the PBS, and Aventis is in on-going
discussions with the government and the PBAC
• Aventis has secured a capped price for LANTUS though Arrow
participating pharmacies. The maximum price that a patient will pay
is:
* 10mL vial (100IU/mL) - $106.05 (We have reports of it being available
for as little as $89)
* 5 x 3mL (100IU/mL) cartridges - $159.05
* The majority of type 1 patients will use one vial per month whilst
some type 2 patients may use more
• Some private health insurers offer generous rebates on non-PBS
prescriptions. Patients should check with the health insurers about
available rebates on LANTUS.
