TRAVEL & BACKPACKING
with Monique and a nice guy whose name I can't remember
(that’d be Duncan – Ed.)

I am a travel virgin. So, I quite surprised myself when at the very last minute I decided to sit in for this session. I'm very glad I did; this was exactly the kind of practical and inspiring session we all like. Some tidbits that I found really interesting were:
• If you leave behind your spare insulin in fridges around the world, you'll be able to find some more (I know this seems obvious, but I found it very reassuring).
• You can find some sort of muesli bar in most countries, or, if you're on a naval warship then there'll be large bulk containers of sugar or honey.
• It's a good idea to wear a medic-alert bracelet, because you really don't know what will happen (yes, mums are right this time).

Both Monique and Duncan have had different overseas experiences, but both have done a lot of long-term travel that has also included manual labouring work and, in Monique's case, a marathon bike ride across Canada (yep, all the way, on a push bike, 60 days’ worth).

This was great to hear, because it seemed like all of the most extreme variables that can make D management challenging were present, and yet they were fine and had fantastic adventures. They were well-prepared, and they kept a very close eye on BSLs and dosages, but they were relaxed.

Near the end, Duncan asked 'What are people most worried about?' and I'm happy to say I was no longer thinking 'Everything...'
