A TASTE OF REALITY CHECK LIVE A wise person once said… "Food to a large extent is what holds a society together and eating is closely linked to deep spiritual experiences." Well, I’m not sure about the deep spiritual experiences but it certainly does its part to hold an event together and so was the case with Reality Check LIVE! MORNING TEA: The morning started with your standard tea and coffee selections (or percolated coffee with soy milk if you preferred, everyone was catered for!) as well as some gluten free but delicious cookies kindly supplied by Freedom Foods… mmm mmmm! Then after a double session of information packed talks and exchanges of ideas it was time for lunch…. LUNCH: ‘Blue Bag’ was the name of the game… delightful blue packages full of lunchtime pleasures. I took part in a satisfying lunchtime dance of a ham, salad and seeded mustard roll complete with a fruit and nut mix and a plum just to round it all off! It was just enough to satisfy the hunger (but not quite enough for some of the growing boys – sorry!). Drinks were also many and plentiful with Saxby’s diet ginger beer the drink on everyone’s lips… (sensationally delicious and no carbs!) Of course, your run-of-the-mill diet soft drinks were also a favourite, but ginger beer was the hot topic for the more adventuous lunchers! Lunchtime entertainment included some clowning around with juggling balls (everyone had a chance to learn something new!) and a guided tour through the gardens by “the Bot’s” very own Kim Kellett. Former RBG Ranger for work! (Reality Check LIVE was her last day at the Gardens)… Reality Check member for fun! DINNER: Well, after a long day of information-packed sessions, helpful exchange of ideas, talking, laughing and making friends it was time to EAT! And eat we did! The impressive buffet selection consisted of a plethora of choices including chicken, lasagne, salads, frittata and so much more (eloquently (& humorously) orchestrated by George!) … then no sooner was the savoury selection polished off than the sweets arrived (many more carbs than Saxby’s diet ginger beer…. But that’s what insulin’s for, after all!) But the food, although fabulous, took second place to the splendour of the drinks. Maybe it was because of the fine selection of wine, maybe it was an afterglow of some pretty spectacular punch, or it could have been all to do with two little words .... GOAT BEER! Mountain Goat is a tiny incy wincy little micro brewery in Richmond and they kindly gave RC a special price so we were able to indulge in some lovely hand-brewed beers to complete the evening…. The goat boys were even kind enough to schedule their (first Friday of every month) brewery open night the same weekend as RC Live so all our interstate guests could meet and greet and goat – did I mention we love Goat? And, might I add, whoever suggested that Reality Check events focused too much on alcohol consumption was wrong…. it’s all part of the fun! It could have been the candles, it could have been the creative table drawing with complimentary kiddy coloured crayons, it could have been the drink and food, and it could have been George’s frivolity or Andy’s photography (which was a lovely interlude between main course and dessert) but whatever it was, it was an evening of fun and merriment had by all!
