insulin ratio's with lots of carbs

This is probably a strange question but do you find that the more carb's you have your ratio changes or stays the same? For example I start work early tomorrow so I have made a smoothie tonight to have for breakfast while I drive there and it comes to 70grams of carbs, I am on a 2:1 ratio for breakfast (MDI) plus 2 extra units for morning insulin resistence. That means 16 units before any correcting if I wake up high. 16 units just seems like a lot so I would tend to have less, purely because it seems like a lot. Is this normal thinking for a diabetic? Do others do this too? I am not sure if I have explained myself very well, sorry.

Hi, what I personally do is not have all the insulin at once. I find with a lot of carbs, they don't all digest at once so I give some insulin to start with and some later after testing. If I give all the insulin straight away I go hypo.

I find that nothing is a perfect science and I'm sure is different from person to person. I have noticed that when I eat a lot of carbs, even more than your 70g, my ratio goes down a bit, that is it is not a linear relationship, so when I eat a lot of carbs I reduce my insulin.

Out of interest your 70g divided by 15 is say 5 exchanges (actually 4 2/3 but lets say 5)
so a ratio of 2:1 if that is your insulin to exchange ratio makes it 10 units
+ 2 units for your insulin resistance = 12 units not ur 16
Have I worked that out right?

Hi bj09,
I use CP's carbohydrate portions, which are 10 grams of carb per cp.
Kezza, I don't tend to hypo with lots of insulin but climb for hours and hours.

70g sounds like huge amounts to me!!!
But I have 2 units of NR for each serve of carbs, so for me I would be having 9 units for 4.5 serves of carbs.

And for me it would also depend on the GI of that 70g.... I tend to have a little extra when having milk as I know that it effects me a little differently. It is said (on the back of my milk...lol) that 250ml is 14.8g of carbs... If I was to drink a glass of straight milk that was 250ml, I would actually count it as 2 serves because that's how my body reacts to milk.

So for me it's not necessarily the amount of carbs I consume, (I am only having about 60-80g a day) but the type. Experiment with it! Consume the same g of carbs for a few days but change the type of foods/drinks and see if your theory works!!
