Pen issues!! while im sick :(

Postby sheldy_robbie » Wed Mar 07, 2012 8:16 pm

i have the flu and already feeling under the weather and even took today off work (feeling bad about it) i have tried to avoid doing that all week.

Last night i was having my levemir and the plunger on my pen didnt seem to want to go down, i eventually got it down after a bit of patience and alot of sting and when i removed the needle from my leg insulin spurted out of the needle, i have no idea how much of it i didnt get because the plunger was all the way down. i instantly freaked out but didnt have another shot because i didnt know how much i lost and was planning on going to work so i didnt want to battle hypo madness all day. i woke up with bsl of 7 and still felt horrid so called in sick and my lunch bsl was 6 but then before dinner i was 17mmol and felt like i had been hit my a truck. to top it off mum had chips and lasange prepared for dinner... omg CARB OVERLOAD so im hoping my very large bolus has covered it and brought me down a bit.
Has anyone else had this problem with pens before??? i have no idea what happpened, i dont know if the high bsl was because im sick or the lack of levemir from last night

I have had problems with my Lantus pens seeming to get 'stuck' and it's extremely difficult to push the end/plunger down. Happened just tonight actually. I usually leave the needle sit in my skin a bit longer than usual in case there's a bit of a 'backlog' of insulin like you've described, as generally the plunger goes down really quickly and suddenly when it decides to work.

I used to have those issues sometimes. I'd try to push down on the pen and it wouldn't go. OR, I'd have the opposite, where I'd push down on the pen and it would 'slip' and deliver half my bolus - usually it did the latter just before it would break completely. This was a few years ago and I know the pens have changed but it was annoying because either way I wouldn't be sure how much was delivered. As you say, there might be a lot of insulin that gets push out but not necessarily inside you! Very annoying. Its even more annoying when you're feeling sick I reckon -

Sorry to hear that Sheldy. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks yeah starting to feel better. I was talking to my sister about it and she suggested that maybe it was because of a lump under my skin but I was injecting in my leg as i usually do it in the stomach. So i doubt there would be a lump but that theory does make sense. I dunno another one of those puzzling D events that I probably won't figure out for years LOL
