Pregnant or TTC

This is a secure and safe place for people to bitch, moan, argue, or rejoice (yes, really) about having Type 1 Diabetes. If something has inspired you or enraged you, here's your opportunity to let everyone know.

Question for the girls who are a bit further along or who have had babies before: What have your experiences been like with Braxton Hicks? I was in a fair bit of pain last night right across the top of my stomach, but it didn't come and go like you would expect contractions to, was just a constant pain that got worse if I moved. Eventually went and sat in the shower until the hot water ran out and that seemed to help. I also went low during this fun little period and then was unexplainably low again this morning. If anything else happens today think I better go get checked out, but if it was just my own slightly different take on braxton hicks then I won't be so worried. Would love to hear a better description of braxton hicks other than "contractions" like all the books say.

Thanks,

Carly.

Hi Carly,

I would suggest that you go and see your doctor or Ob regarding these as they sound pretty full on and even if they are Braxton Hicks they will be able to check the bub for you and make sure everything is ok and put your mind at ease, the difficulty is that everyone is so differnt and has such differnt experiences throughout pregnancy.

I'm now coming up to 38 weeks pregnant with my first bub and I only started getting braxton hicks last week, for me I found they tended to come on if I had been on my feet for a while and quite active it would feel as if my stomach was suddenly getting really tight and heavy and when I pressed my stomach it was absolutely solid and rigid, it would only last for a couple of minute or so and then soften up again, it didn't hurt as such it was just an odd feeling, like yourself I wasn't totally sure what to expect so I'm assuming these are Braxton Hicks contractions - I haven't gone into full blown labour yet and everything is still all good with the bub as I had a visit with the Ob on weds so it must have been my version of BH. For me personally I felt the contractions in the lower part of my tummy but I know on speaking to lots of other people they say they tend to get them at the top of the tummy.

Hope everything else is going well for you and you manage to get your mind put at ease on this.

Hi Amber- Sorry to hear that the endo who visits is so unhelpful. I don't want to push but I would keep trying. I know my endo does a lot of shared care with GPs when women are in regional areas. I think the way to get onto it is to contact the big women's hospital in your state and talk to their diabetes and pregnancy team and tell them what's going on. They then often set up arrangements for women in regional areas. I'd encourage you to have a go at getting more specialised support.

Lara and Ali - Big hugs on the morning sickness. I only just managed to avoid hospital at the worst of mine but was in a bad way.... if it's any consolation at about 17 weeks, it disappeared and I got 6 weeks or so of feeling great, like I'd almost forget I was pregnant sometimes! Hope your ob helps you Ali. Good luck.

Carly - Yeah I agree, probably best to ask your doctor about it asap. Have you found the Multiple Birth Association's forum (www.amba.org.au) ? You could ask some pregnant mums there to see if your experience is a twins thing too. I've started getting all sorts of pain at just 23 or 24 weeks that everyone tells me is to do with my body having to grow so fast with two babies so that's a chance..... I've also learn Braxton Hicks can be associated with needing to rest, or being too active, but do get some advice as that sounds no fun at all :( Good luck.

Julie - I meant to reply to your question too .... there are so many different discussions going on in this thread I think we need our own forum to make it make sense! On the smell in the new house issue, we have just had our floors done this week (which involved 3 coats of polyurethane throughout) and the guy who did it was pretty keen I not be here while it was being done given my pregnancy but not at all concerned about me moving back in after the event. That is entirely not medical or reliable, but I have come back today - last coat was done yesterday - and will be staying here from tonight. If it's making you vomit and you have another option of somewhere to stay, I would probably stay away, but if it's any consolation I am living in a house with freshly polyurethaned floors - that said, it's not making me vomit. Maybe your body is telling you something? If pregnancy has taught me anything it would be that your body has weird and wonderful ways of telling you what it needs - these days I vomit if I'm tired or stressed! Good luck, hope you get a chance to enjoy the renovation soon but take it easy.

Hi Lucia and Jenna,

Thanks for your advice! I had been out doing some christmas shopping after already having a pretty big day on Friday so wouldn't be surprised if that had something to do with it. Have been fine since and the girls have been very active so I think it may have been my body telling me to slow down. I have an ob appt and ultrasound on wednesday so will bring it up then and see what they think. Lucia I have joined the AMBA but didn't realise they had a forum might go have a look at that thanks for the suggestion.

I hope everyone is doing well and their babies are growing nicely! Personally i'm starting to count down the last 4-5 weeks that I have left, looking forward to meeting my girls and having my organ space back!

Hi everyone!

There are so many people I've wanted to reply to and I've got myself all confused, so I'll come back later and do my replies - If you've answered me and I haven't responded - I'm sorry! It's not you. I'm just struggling to keep up with everything non-essential at the moment.

Well, 'Pig one' (my 12 year old DD) is very excited about 'Pig two and Pig three' - She's all set to help out and is being a better support than 'Daddy' at the moment! I'm not relying on her, but just letting her enjoy being involved and feel a part of things.

I've finally seen the Endo, D ed nurse, Obs, dietician, high-risk midwife (and a fascinated student who tagged along for most of it!) - Wellington hospital has a clinic where they get all the professionals there on the same afternoon (Wed for diabetes) and you see them all in quick succession. They were all lovely and I felt a lot better after seeing them, apart from two things (details below). I'd been worried about them over-medicalising it, but for the most part they listened to me and were happy with the way things are going - Especially my BGLs. :) I was also thrilled that it wasn't a bunch of old men. For some reason I'd had a fear of having to lock horns with a bunch of the old-guard, if you know what I mean? ;)

Issues I wasn't happy with:

1.) The whole not-negotiable attitude over having to be on a drip with insulin and glucose. I HATE relinquishing control! It's hospital policy and the general attitude is that I have no choice. I'll go whine about this one in the thread dedicated to it, but thought it was worth mentioning here too.

2.) (Non-D related, but causing stress which isn't good for the bubs or my BGLs) The high risk midwife is lovely but needs educating on the importance of appropriate means of communication. I need to go look into hospital policy, NZ laws and human rights to sort this one out. I'm Deaf (and had an NZSL interpreter present for these appointments, as I'm entitled to by law). The midwife was saying that I have to call her (numbers provided on business card) in x, y and z circumstances and call the birthing unit if it's after hours. Problem: The internet relay is slow to use and only available in business hours. When I was still with the independent midwife she was happy to be texted when things were urgent and emailed for routine things. The hospital high-risk midwife refused both: The only communication options available to me after hours or when I'm not near a computer. She said I have to get someone else to call for me. My partner is also Deaf, which she knows. So basically this means asking DD (12!) to call, or getting my mum to call. This isn't only not ideal, it's actually dangerous and places responsibility on the wrong people and takes away my rights, all to suit the way she thinks the hospital works. I'm sure there are alternate rules, but I have yet to find out so am pretty stressed atm.

Anyway, other than all that it was pretty good. I do have one question for the other twin mummies though:
I noticed at least one of you seems to be expecting to go to full-twin-term-ish (37-38wks)... I've been told (first by an independent MW, then the endo and obs) that with twins and type one that I'd be lucky to make it to 35 weeks and they really don't expect me to get that far. What have other twin mummies been told?

Oh and I've also been told that my twins will definitely be going to NICU as soon as they're born. No ifs, buts or maybes about it. Which isn't what any mum wants, of course, but if it's going to happen (for their own health and safety ofc) I'm at least glad that they have warned me with enough time to prepare myself for them being whisked away from me. I really want to be able to see them/hold them etc, but with the likelihood of them being prem, plus my D in the mix plus the fact that they may have complications from an inherited bleeding disorder (my crappy genes). Well. Things will not go my way.

Just to complicate things, while I'm still getting 24/7 sickness, I'm also now getting heartburn. The two generally don't overlap, but with twins this is apparently not uncommon. Joy (not). Eating is not something I look forward to or enjoy right now.

Congrats to all those with good news and hugs to all those with frustrations - I'll do proper replies soon... Promise!

Hi Guys,

thanks for all the well wishes, I'm now 38 weeks along and I've officially started Maternity leave which is making it all the more real, little one doesn't seem to be in any hurry to come out though, her head is in the pelvis but she isn't engaged yet but I swear she is dropping a little every day, will be seeing my ob tomorrow and will probably have another growth scan to determine if he is happy to let me carry on or if we need to look at inducing before my due date (I'm really really hoping to have a spontaneous labour if possible).

My Diabetes is being pretty well behaved at the moment and insulin requirements are stable which is good and I've managed to get my ob and the hospital I'm giving birth in to let me control my diabetes throughout the labour. I'vee been out and stocked up on cereal bars, raisons and powerade to take in with me to ensure I can stave off any potential hypos during labour.

I'll keep everyone updated on how the next few weeks pan out, I'm just so excited that its the final count down and in a matter of days I'll be holding my little girl

I hope everyone else is doing well and are all looking forward to Christmas

Hi Jacqueline,

Do you have any other options as far as hospital choices etc? I'm exactly the same as you re: relinquishing control and even though i.v. insulin is the norm at the hospital where I will be delivering my Endo has been able to convince them that I should remain in control. As far as the methods of communication they are allowing that's just bull***t! Is there a local deaf association who you could get to contact this midwife on your behalf? As long as they have a mobile number that is manned 24/7 I don't see why they couldn't make an exception for you and allow you to text them if required.

As far as your questions regarding delivery dates for twins, I have been told a Caesar is the safest option for me and will be conducted at around 37 weeks (will be asking for a more specific date at my appt tomorrow). I think some medical people jump to conclusions that because we're having twins we will go into premature labour (i've seen a number of obstetricians as i'm a public patient and have been a bit shocked by some of the comments i've had about how they expect my pregnancy to go and about my babies coming early), but that's not always the case. As long as everything is going well and your babies are a good size I don't see why they would want to deliver as early as it has been suggested to you (of course if the babies decide it's time then we just have to roll with it). I have been told there is a "fair chance" that my babies will need to spend a bit of time in the special care nursery, but that all depends on how everything goes it's certainly not a given, but if you have other medical issues as well that may change your situation. I would be asking why they are of that opinion and possibly be looking for a second opinion before you give in and accept what they say as the way it has to be.

But as you said the health of your babies is top priority and what needs to be done needs to be done. Just take the best care of yourself as you can and hopefully things will go well for you and your babies. Good luck with everything!

Hi Jacqueline,

I dont know a huge amount about twins but I totally agree with Carlz about their treatment of you.
I would definitely be reporting it and writing a formal letter. Perhaps this can help in terms of explaining what happened last time and how supportive it was. I find it disgraceful to expect a 12 year old to be responsible for relaying issues, particularly in emergency situations!

Let us know how it goes. Wish you all the best xx

Hi Ladies,

First of all I just wanted to wish Jenna all the very best for delivery of bub! I hope it's a safe and wonderous experience for you, your partner and bubba!
I'm sure we all agree that we can't wait to read about your birth story :)

Also, just wanted to check in with AliG - how are you going? how's the morning sickness?? I can't remember who else is newly pregnant (sorry!) but I hope you're all doing well too!!!! Keep hydrated! This awful heat is really not so good!

At my appointment today I met Cassie B - great to put a face to a name :) I'm sorry we didn't really get to finish our chat, but there's always RC and email to discuss (or whinge in frustration) our pregnancies and health professionals treating us...

I am currently 31wks+ 5 days, and my clinic appointments were with ALL the HCPs (Endo, OBs, Midwives and DE), but on a one-on-one basis... Cassie, I totally agree with you - why don't we get to meet with all our health care team at the same time, in the same room, and be all on the same page about what's going on with our pregnancy and birth plan??? Seeing different ppl with diff opinions can be very frustrating, and confusing, and we're often left feeling like our questions are not answered! I was there from 9am and didn't get into my car until about 1:30pm (I ended up having a hypo during my last apopintment there, and they didn't let me leave until I was about 5mmols, even though I stressed that I was going to grab lunch there straight away - at least they genuinely care!!).

Anyway, I brought up the topic of "having" to be c-sectioned or induced, and the OB was very (too?) casual about it all... I asked him if it's still possible for me to have a natural delivery (vaginal), and he was basically like "yeah, why not?" I didn't really get any answers, but I probed the midwife a bit more and (and I brought up not wanting an IV drip of Insulin and Glucose - I explained that my hubby and I will be testing every half hour to ensure I'm not going high or low, and that if things did get out of control, then I would submit to an IV), she understood this, but couldn't guarantee it, but basically we established that if the Endo docs are happy with my D stability (which they are very happy with at the mo); and the OBs are happy with how bub is progressing (so far so good, she's "normal" size for her gestation), then the MW didn't see why I couldn't have a vaginal delivery, and why I couldn't keep my pump on. SHe even said that testing every half hour is more than what they would expect from us anyway...

BUT.... I have a scan late next week (at 32w+6d) and if bub has increased massively, and is borderline on normal/large size, then we may have to reconsider the delivery options; and/or request another scan at around the 36wks mark to determine her growth then too. I was generally OK with this - it's just a bit too early for me to discuss the finer details of my birth preferences with anyone there, when none of us know what her size is etc etc. But at this stage, she's head down, spine facing out to the world on my right side. She's super active, but does her her quiet moments, which can be concerning (especially when she barely made a movement at all on Sunday!).

Hubby and I have gone ahead and hired a Doula too - she's also a registered nurse, so hopefully, between now and the delivery of bubba, she should be able to translate some medical jargon for us; empower us both with the confidence to (politely) challenge or refuse treatments if I don't want them (ie: VE's; IV drip of insulin and glucose, etc); and be a super support system during the actual delivery, whether it be vaginal or c-sect....

Anyway, I wanted to end this lost post on a positive, wonderful note and see if you ladies would like to post up your shortlist of baby names... Hubby and I are having a girl, and we both like the first name Mikayla or Mia, with the middle name Jayde or Joy... not sure yet! We do have another couple of names we like, but we want to be able to meet our little girl first, and spend a few hours with her before we decide on one 100%.

Hope you're all doing well!!!!!!!!!!!

best of Luck Jenna and I really hope you get the birth that you want!

Really Ernib you cant be 31W.... didnt we meet when you were like 5w? time really cant go that fast can it!!!!!!!

The MS has really slowed down which is super and also makes me wonder if all is ok! such a stress head!
Hubby makes me a piece of Vegimite on toast daily at 4am when he leaves for work and I think this has really helped keep it at bay although I do still spew I dont feel like dealth 24/7 which is quite nice!

are you going for induction Ernib or waiting until it happens naturally??

i am 10w 1d and times seems to be flying! Hubby family doesnt know yet, actually most people dont know yet except for you guys, my parents and a couple of very close friends. at 6w I wanted to tell everyone but now for some reason I dont want to tell a sole..... makes me wonder if I am trying to proctect myself as I keep having dreams that I bleed and it doesnt end well. I am sure that is just my mummy instict kicking in though and freaking out??

Hi Everyone,

Erin thats amazing. You must be soo excited!
Good luck to all the ladies due in the next few weeks. Cant wait to hear all about it!
Ali thats great that the MS is going away. I know what you mean though - I didnt feel sick today and was freaking out something was wrong - but it was all ok. saw ob today. he thinks im about 9w4d.
We discussed natural vs c section. He feels more comfortable with C. Said that we can decide later but sometimes if sugars are up and down (which mine always are) that C is less stressful for all involved. usually at 37-38 weeks. My endo said 70% of all diabetics have Csection but 80% with pumps (weird). So I thought Id see if anyone had heard differently. I know its early - just a bit of a control freak so like to have all the info.
Otherwise all going well. the stint in hospital seemed to help. MS is under control with Zofran (I want to kiss whoever came up with that drug!).
Good luck to everyone - hope everything progresses beautifully :)

Hi everyone,

Yes ErniB, it was lovely to meet you face-to-face, and I'm also sorry we didn't get a chance to say seeya once we were done, but as I mentioned, my appointments were going pretty much the same as yours - and it's kinda funny, but I also ended up hypo waiting for the DE (didn't tell her that though, so I was free to waddle off and get lunch with hubby)!

Ali G and larap - yey for the slowing down of MS, and don't worry - I stressed when my nausea slowed down/disappeared as well! And Ali G, I also went through a stage of not wanting to tell anyone about the pregnancy in case everything went awry - and I'm still (at just before 36wks) very cautious and nervous about the possibility things could go terribly wrong...

I don't know, it might just be me, but I'm starting to form a theory that maybe we're all (as T1s) a little bit more susceptible to worrying and feeling the pressure of risks/uncontrollable events anyway - because right from pre-conception we're all made to feel so responsible for our 'high risk' label and to be so conscious/vigilant about our "control" of "uncontrollable" sugar levels etc. I figure facing so much pressure/stressing so much over getting that "right", we also become extra worried/aware of all the other things that might/could go wrong - whether or not they're actually in our control...?

I know a few people I've spoken to have had similar experiences to what you've mentioned, so I think you're right, I think it's just mummy instinct kicking in, and although I know it's definitely easier said than done, try not to stress too much about it - I've got the feeling that for the rest of motherhood that care/concern/worry will never really go away!

Hi all

Hope you are well and getting some chill out time in amongst this crazy time of year.

Just wanted to pass on something I found out during the week which you may know about but I wasn't aware of. If you are going to deliver through the 'private' system they recommend you put your baby/ies on your health insurance 3 months before delivery. If this doesn't happen then you can be charged for any 'special care' attention for the baby/ies after delivery. Thought I better pass it on as I would hate anyone to be caught out. I found out through my health insurance that if my husband and I are on the same health insurance plan the babies are automatically covered, but their 'names' and expected date of delivery (or twin 1 and twin 2 if we don't know their names!) need to be registered.

Hope all those people with m/s are starting to feel a bit better. I found ginger tea was great and about all I could stomach at times (if my sugar levels were dropping I'd have ginger tea and honey. I am now at 16 weeks and have found my m/s has really eased up but creeps back when I am overtired or have eaten something too rich e.g Kofta Nawabi.

I was wondering if anyone else found their b/s levels from 16 weeks + creeping up between 12am and 6.30am in the morning? I woke up this morning at 9.0 at 7am (the highest morning reading in a long time) after being 5.6 at 12am. I have increased my basal slightly so we'll see what happens tonight.

Best of luck to all those nearing their due date.

Cheers Gen

Hi Gen

Yup, I found my night time insulin went a bit strange, I found that I couldn't eat anything before going to bed unless my sugars were 3 or below and even then it could only be about 5 Or at most 10 grams, otherwise I would be going high around 1am have to do a top up injection And keep monitoring through the night, I also found my long acting seemed to stop working as well From about 6am so occasionally had to do a small top up first thing in the morning depending on when I was having breakfast etc,

A lot of it unfortunately comes down to trial and error and how your body is reacting to the pregnancy,

Probably worth chatting with your endo as well to see what he suggests

Thanks for the reminder! I was also told that because hubby and I are on the policy baby is covered but you have to add them - MBF - before the baby is born in case they need special care etc otherwise a nice bill coming up!

I get to see my little girl tomorrow!! I am officially 32w + 5d (today 21/12/11), and the scan tomorrow may possibly determine the outcome of my baby delivery options....

Here's what may happen:

- if bub is measuring right in the middle of "normal" now, then I have a better chance of having a vaginal birth - but will possibly have a re-scan at 36-38wks to suss her out closer to d-day!

- if bubs is measuring borderline normal/large now, then it may look like I'll need c-sect anyway, coz she's only going to get bigger between now and 38wks or so! But I prolly need a re-scan anyway, around the 36-38wks to check her out one last time.

I guess I won't know any other details though, until the early new year, after I've seen the OB's team to discuss the findings of tomorrow...

Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

Good luck to those who are ready to burst!!! I can't wait to hear of any birthing stories of Christmas babies :) :)

Yey for your scan ErniB! Enjoy it but don't stress too much about the size, as I mentioned our 'little one' is measuring >97th percentile, and they're still letting me try for vaginal delivery first...

In fact, they booked the induction today, all sticking to 'plan' it's all scheduled to 'start' at 7pm a week from tomorrow - Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!/k!!

Oh wow Cassie, looks like you might have your bub first,

I'm due next Thursday and am trying everything under the sun to get little one to come out naturally but she is in no hurry at all and is perfectly comfortable in there. My Ob is being really good and I'm having regular fetal heart rate monitoring and provided this is ok he is letting me go to term and may even let me go a couple of days over, if nothing has changed in the next 7 days though I may also be induced next Thursday or Friday!!!

Also Erin, when I had my last growth scan at 34 weeks, my little one was showing in the 70th percentile for growth (but with a thankfully average size head) and my Ob is perfectly happy with this and is having no problems at all letting me go to term and also letting me try and do a vaginal delivery,

Good luck to you both if I don't get to speak to you before and hopefully next time I post on here my little girl will have arrived into the world

WOWOWOWOWOWOW Jennat and Cass! That's so exciting, yet I'm nervous for you! sorry! eeeek! As for the induction, are you trying the gel first??

Cass, How is the battle of the IV drips going? (ie. insulin and glucose IV drips) And, if you don't mind re-freshing my memory, but which OB doc booked you in for the induction? I'll try and make sure I don't get that lady we were talking about in the waiting room (the yelling one!?!? LOL)

Also, an interesting thought, someone (a T1er) told me that most T1 women have girls as their first borns, as the female sperms can survive through the acidic nature of our bodies.... I'm having a girl, it looks like JennaT is too - who else is having a little girl? This same person had a daughter first too :)

WOW! I can clearly remember joining this thread when I was about 5 or 6 wks preg - thinking "am I posting my pregnancy announcement too early? I don't want to have to take it back if something goes wrong..." and I remember reading all about the other ladies newly pregnant too around that same time......AND NOW LOOK WHERE WE ARE!!! We are amazing women, amazing mothers, and amazing T1ers.. I am so super happy for us all right now :)

For those ladies about to start on the new journey of life, with a new little being in this world, I truly wish you an amazing experience! I can't wait to see pics of bub, and read some birth stories...

GOOD LUCK xx

Thanks so much Carlz and larap! I really appreciate the support. :)

Yes, there is Deaf Aotearoa and also the local Deaf club where I know people who are very onto it as to what our rights are and how to handle things. It's a hard time of year to get anything sorted, but I'm working on it. It is definitely a breach of human rights, privacy and hospital protocol! So I should be able to get something done but unfortunately it's still all up in the air right now. I'll keep everyone posted about how I get on though! I just do not need all the drama and stress right now. Ugh.

Carlz, they pretty much assume I won't carry past about 35 weeks because I'm having twins and am T1, they're not planning to deliver early they just say it'll happen anyway. I know a little over 50% of twins are born prem (before 37 weeks), but I just feel like they're assuming the worst when it mightn't happen. It might be to prepare me in case it does happen, as it's likely, but they talked about it as if it's an absolute certainty. I'm so glad to see you've struck it too but not from everyone. Perspective and balance really help! Thanks! :)

No I don't really have a choice of hospitals, unfortunately. I live very close to the big main hospital and any of the others would send me to them anyway.

AliG - Yes I've seen them, there are other companies that make similar ones, one with more peapod like shape and make from recycled silver... Which I have! :D

Well, I got tired of battling the 24/7 nausea and lack of appetite because of it - I hadn't thrown up since resorting to seabands, ginger and mints of demand, but then had a particularly bad day, barfed my guts out and relented and went to the Dr - I have pills and can now eat properly! :D

Wow, some of you ladies are getting really close to delivering now! :D I can't wait to read how you get on and see some pics! :) Best of luck to you! :D

Great news: we saw our little girl this morning! She's measuring quite petite for 32w+6d, with all her sizes in the 'lowish' percentile:

Biparietal diameter: 15th%
Occipitofrontal diameter: 21st%
Femur length: 36th%
Head circumference: 10th%

But her abdominal circumference is: 95th% LOL :) Turns out, even with excellent D control (a1c is currently 5.3%), there's still a chance our bubs' will have a larger-than-average abdomen.

Approx weight now: 5 pound (approx 2.2kg).

Placenta nice & high, on the front wall; and her head is down & facing my bum ;)

Overall, excellent news with no bad surprises :) Sonographer advised that I will be re-scanned in a few wks to check her abdomen circ & weight again.

Yay for little Pikachu!! I'm so proud of her, and myself, for all the hard work we've done together.

Erin- It's great getting confirmation that everything's going well isn't it!? I had a U/S today (34 wks 2 days) and was told my girls are 2.4 and 2.8 kg's, and like your little one both have fat little bellies. My HBA1c's have been in the low 6's throughout the pregnancy and everything else looks good other than some high blood pressure in the last few weeks- now on BP tablets and getting better BP levels, so i'm not too worried about the belly size. Going up to the hospital to book in for the caesar tomorrow, booking it in for the 18th of Jan, 3 weeks from today! Then we'll see if the girls play along and stay in there till then.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

Oooooh! Exciting Carly! :D I'll be interested to see how long your girls can stay nestled in there. :) You're so close to the magic 35wks that I'm told I'll be lucky to get to, that I'm so thrilled to see your little ticker at the bottom of your post moving steadily along, it gives me so much hope! :) Best of luck keeping then in there for as long as possible/until your c-section date! :) I so hope everything goes well for you all! :)

I've got some edema already, at 16 weeks and 5 days, so I'm hoping that it's not going to be taken as another sign that I won't go the distance. It's not bad yet, but is worse in this summer heat. Ick. I had the same thing with my daughter but in the third trimester not the second! They say twin symptoms are often in line with uterus size though, so 4-10 weeks ahead. They say a bit of edema is normal from about 20 weeks, so I guess it's not as early as it seems (ie, that'd put me in the normal range taking twins into account). I've got all my rings off... Except one. Bugger. I'll have to grease the thing off when the swelling goes down. Ice water is helping, so here's hoping! ;)

Oooh! :D Post script to my last post:

Good old google came through for me... I got that last ring off! :D Soaking that hand in nice icy cold water to take some of the swelling down, then squirting it with window cleaner and twisting it off. Done! :) PHEW! :D

Wow, lots to catch up on...Cassieb, I'm assuming you may have had your little one my now or may be in the throws of it all judging by your post last week but all the best! I hope you get the natural delivery you're after.

Babies will be popping up everywhere on here soon! I can't wait to hear about them all.

I am 23 weeks tomorrow and ticking along nicely. Feeling very well but just starting to get uncomfortable in bed at night so I think I'll try some pilates and maybe get a body pillow.

Wishing you all an amazing 2012 to those expecting, and for the thos TTC lots of baby dust for the year ahead.

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyones babies are happy and healthy!

I am coming up to 12 weeks. MS is getting worse - struggling to keep anything down and have so far lost 2kg!
I am really nervous about my scan on Tuesday. Was anyone else? I have tried to keep my sugars stable but they are better but still up and down - particularly with food!
Anyway hopefully it will all be good. Only 3 days to go.

Larap, I was super nervous about my scans to start with, and I was lucky enough to have a 6 & 8 week scan before the 13 week scan (I was under a fertility specialists care). I remember saying to my husband before the first one at 6 weeks, that what ever happens, I'd tried my very best managing sugars, but blessedly everything was fine. I think nerves are completely normal...and I'm sure it will all be fine. You'll be relieved once you get there.

All the best!

Hi all,

Hope you all had a great Xmas, I'm very excited to announce the birth of our daughter Chloe Jayde yesterday, she weighed in at 3.777 kg and is absolutely gorgeous :-)

We didn't quite get the birth we had hoped for but this was for reasons totally separate to the diabetes, I'll come back and give the whole story when I'm not quite so exhausted!

Hope everyone else is going well and Cassie how did your induction go?

Jennat!! What amazing news! Chloe sounds like she was a healthy size :)
I can't wait to read your birth story, but until then, rest when you can and enjoy being a mumma :)

Cass!?!? I'm sure you've had your little girl too by now, but I just wanted to see how everything went? I've been thinking about you!

I'm due for one last scan this coming Friday (35wks) so the docs have 2 close scans of Pikachu and her measurements, therefore being able to guesstimate her size in a few more weeks (around the 38wk mark). From this scan, we'll have more of an idea of the possible delivery options...

Hoping everyone's new year is a happy & safe one xx

Hi everyone,

While I haven't commented on this topic before, I have been following it occasionally and have learnt so much from you all :)
Congratulations to those who are expecting, and also to those who have delivered :)

We had a supremely hectic 2011 with packing up our lives in NZ and touring Europe for 3 months before settling in Melbourne.
We have had our wedding planned for this coming March for about 9 months now, so it was quite a year for us!

So, just so that we don't have a boring 2012 with only a wedding to get through, we were blessed with a special xmas present.
A positive pregnancy test.

I've met with my new endo a few times, and have discussed trying to conceive with her - she told me at my last appointment to go home and have lots of sex as she was happy with my control! So we met with a obstetrician about a month ago, and decided we would let nature take it's course for the next few months and see what happened.

The plan was to properly try to conceive just after our wedding, but what do ya know...an early blessing :)

So all things going well 2012 looks to be an even bigger year for us!!

We are still learning how private health care works here in Australia, but I think we are getting the hang of it - having said that, any advice anyone can offer would be very very very much appreciated!

I was wondering if I could ask a proper question of any of you (I'm sure it will be my first of many, as I am still trying to get used to things!)...

I haven't had a chance to make an appt with my endo yet due to the xmas new year period.
I'm keen to start recording my blood sugars and food etc as of yesterday so when I do meet with her I have a set of records with me.
I have tested approx 12-15 times a day (including night) for the past 2 years, so am rather used to it.

Do any of you have some kind of template for your recordings? I'm not entirely sure what info she will want recorded, and perhaps they prefer it laid out a certain way ie pre meal, food type and carbs, post meal etc etc?

Thanks so so much

Congratulations Jenna!! Chloe Jayde is a beautiful name. I'm really happy for you!

Looking forward to hearing about more babies soon!

Nicola, Congrats to you too! What a lovely surprise for you. With regards to your questions: My endo usually just flicks through my meter. He's quite happy with my levels & Hba1c, so just checks the average readings and the general readings on the meter itself when I call in. My ob wanted everything written/printed the first time I saw him, but now he has gotten to know me better is happy to as me how everything is going rather than check up on me. It sounds like you're all over the testing program, which is great. My ob thinks I test too much, but I feel comfortable checking more frequently and thats the main thing. Overnight is good too, as it's a long time between otherwise. I think all Drs are different and they'll tell you what they want when you catch up.
With regards to private health insurance, you may just want to double check the waiting periods. I'm with NIB, and they required me to have the family cover for 12 months before birth, and they count the due date rather than the actual birth date where as some insurers won't cover you if you give birth prior to your due date/12 month waiting period. Hope this make sense? (We stopped and started ours, so I'm just squeezing in.....I am due on the 27th of April, and my family cover only kicks in on the 18th - I will likely have a c/section in the first half of April but NIB will still cover me provided I show proof of my date scans. Some other companies work differently.)

Happy new year everyone!!

Hi all

Thanks so much for all of the comments, I'm still in absolute awe every time I look at our daughter, she already has her own little personality :-)

As promised I'll pass on the birth story, as most of you know throughout the pregnancy I was fighting so hard to have as natural a birth as possible without intervention, I found an ob and an endo who were happy to help me do this. My hba1cs throughout the pregnancy were 6.1, 5.8, 5.5 and 5.1 which I and my care team were really happy with, in the last couple of weeks of the pregnancy I was having weekly visits with the ob and weekly fetal heart rate monitoring, everything was going well and my on was happy to let me carry on and hopefully go into spontaneous labour. Sure enough at 1.30 am on sat 31 st dec ( I was 40 weeks and 2 days at this time) I woke up to my waters breaking and the start of contractions,

The contractions were pretty full on from the start lasting about 40secs, 5 minutes apart, over the next few hours they started lasting longer and at 3 min apart or 5am we decided to head to the hospital. Once we got there the hospital was happy to leave us alone and respect birth plan, by 11am with no pain relief I was at 8cm dilated and by 12 I was fully dilated and entering pushing stage. It was at this point things started to go wrong. During the early labour I had been experiencing excruciating back pain but with the help of my partner and doula worked through it, however when I had to start pushing I had no urge to push and the pain became almost unbearable, I persevered though as I knew we were nearly there. However after another 2 hours nothing was happening the bub was stuck, my ob was becoming concerned as he couldn't see any reason for it, my contractions were becoming less regular and we were in limbo, he put me in a sintocin drip to restart the contractions but after another hour still nothing, by this time I'd been in labour for nearly 15 hours, hadn't eaten ( my diabetes was fine as my partner was managing it for me), the ob still couldnt identify why bub wasn't moving so we had no choice but to have an epidural and try for a forceps delivery, this didn't work either, bub was stuck and after two huge pulls we had no choice but to go for an emergency ceased, Chloe was born 5 minutes later at a healthy 3.777 kgs, 52 cm long.

The issue looks like I have a deformed tailbone so there was no way little one could progress down the birth canal!

Although we didn't get the exact birth we wanted I am still so happy that we were given the opportunity to try and it was due to circumstances totally out of our control and unrelated to the diabetes that caused the changes, I have no regrets at all and cannot believe how in love I am already with my little girl,

I suppose what I want to say with this is hold your guns, make sure your medical team respect your wishes but just be aware there are things out of our control too :-)

Good luck to everyone on this amazing journey, I'll try and post some pictures soon,

Congrats Jenna! That is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing. Its great to see someone going to term and having their wishes respected!
Chloe sounds adorable! Just enjoy :)

Nicola - Congrats! Thats great news! The way I remember it - private health insurance needs to wait 12 months before they cover baby. Not 100% sure but I think it covers mum beforehand. Just give a few places a call. That been said the public systems are great and super supportive so dont stress. They are very well equipped and plenty women here are using the public systems - so you and bub will be in good hands!

I had my 12 week scan today. was so nervous and sick this morning but all went super well. All looking great and progressing nicely. I was so worried as I have lost 2kg from been sick and have struggled with my sugars but all is well! Not showing any signs of any issues - yay :) I finally feel like I can semi relax :)
Anyway hope everyone is doing well. Looking forward to many more healthy happy delivery stories :)

I know when I first found out about the twins I was curious to know when my BGLs might start to be affected by the twin pregnancy... We're on the up now. Just had to adjust my long acting. 17w5d. Thought it might be interesting for anyone who comes along reading old posts wondering like I did! ;) My levels have been screwy since the last day of last year. The annoying DNE who has been grating on my nerves a bit has actually been quite helpful this morning - Maybe the holiday break did her some good. I hope so, maybe she just really needed a break and we can start the year with a better vibe going from now on... I have hope! ;)

Hi everyone

I've been reading your thread for ages, hoping I'd be able to join one day! Well, amazingly my second round of IVF worked and I discovered I'm pregnant just before Christmas. I expected to have lots of hypos but in fact I'm having the opposite. I'm about 6weeks and am really insulin resistant. I used to take about 1 unit to 9g for breakfast but even 1:5 isn't cutting it just now. Lunch and dinner are a bit hit or miss too. My last HbA1c was 6.5 but I'd love to get it lower. However, I seem to be hitting at least 10 an hour after meals, at least once a day. I have checked my basal rates with the CGMS and think I have them sorted but my boluses are so huge now that they can often make me hypo about 4 hours later. I'm about to go and see my DE to see if she can shed some light but I supposed I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'm not the only person this has happened to. It is all I think about at the moment. I thought I'd be so pleased about being pregnant, and I am, but I'm worried I'll end up in the psychiatric unit rather than the maternity one!

Thanks in advance for your help

Claire you are not alone!!!

I thought I was supposed to hypo as well but the opposite in extreme levels which lead me to believe that I wasnt pregnant !!

I constanly battled until about week 10 with highs ALL the time! and I am talking 12-15 after every meal no matter what I took until I started taking a small amount 20 mins before a meal seems to help kick it into gear - not to much though esp if you have MS as this can be a real pain!!

now about 13 weeks and the hypo are just staring for me - fun times! but still plently of highs in there still!

At the start I thought it would be my fault that my baby would be messed up due to my levels but then realised that I need to be sane to care for bubba! so I relaxed a little and dont think about it all the time now, my hba1c is still 6 so I am happy with that!

Welcome!

Hi everybody! Hope you all had a great chistmas/new year.

Claire- Congratulations! As Ali said try to relax, you're not alone. I too found I needed more insulin in the early weeks which then reduced at around 11 weeks but then started going up again at probably around 15 weeks. I've now found my insulin requirements have been dropping slightly but steadily since 32 weeks. Basically pregnancy is a roller coaster and we just have to manage it as best as we can but don't put yourself in the psych ward over it! I tried not to stress too much even when my levels were hitting mid teens after meals, hormones do horrible things and sometimes it would take 3 correction boluses to bring them back down. My HBA1c's have been in the mid 6's throughout my pregnancy and while I would have preferred them to be a bit lower I wouldn't have wanted to have any more hypos than I did and my girls are a good size and my ob and endo are happy so I think I've done ok. Try to relax and just do what you can but don't drive yourself insane over it. Good luck!

Jenna- Congratulations on the birth of your daughter Chloe! Beautiful name. You did so well to get to 40 weeks and go through a natural birth and follow your plan. The important thing is that you and your little girl are safe and healthy. Good luck with the next stage of your life and thank you for sharing your journey with us.

Nicola- Congratulations to you too, wow 12-15 tgests a day sounds like you have it well covered already, I have an insulin pump so all my record keeping is done via that, but I would just ask your endo how they would like the info as they all seem to be different, but usually flexible so just go with what works for you for now.

Lara- Glad to hear your scan went well, I think everyone gets nervous about them, but it's soooo reassuring to see your baby and be told that everything looks fine. Hope the MS settles down for you soon.

Jacqueline- I made it past 35 weeks!!!!!!!

My blood pressure has come down again with the assistance of a very low dose of some blood pressure tablets, insulin requirements continue to slowly reduce, caesar is now booked in for 16th Jan so I only have about a week and a half to go! I have a bit of swelling happening so trying to stay off my feet, also have nasty carpel tunnel keeping me awake at night (preparing me for the sleepless nights to come). I have one more ultrasound on tuesday next week, then having steroid injections on wednesday and thursday to mature my little ones lungs before they're born the following monday! The steroids apparently stuff up BSL's for about 3 days so will be doing lots of testing and trying to keep them as good as possible. Not long to go now, honestly i'm pretty over it and can't wait for them to be out, but then once they're out i'll probably wish I could put them back in!

Will keep you all up to date, hope everybody is doing well!

Carly.

Claire,

I am pretty much like you.

I also thought I would be hit with lots of lows, but that hasn't really been the case for me (yet?)

My levels during the day and night generally sit around 5-6, but once a day, guaranteed, I'll hit 9 or 10. Usually it is if I test the waters and eat carbs for lunch. Whether it be two pieces of sandwich bread, or just the one (or one time when I ate 5 fries - go figure), I'll still hit the high level.

I've not been a big carb eater for the last few years, not on purpose, it just turned out that way. For the last 6 months I've taken either a salad or stir fried veggies for lunch, so I think I'll have to continue doing that.

I'm looking forward to being able to see my endo, as I feel like although I'm doing an OK job at keeping my levels relatively low, it would be good to have a bit of guidance from someone who has treated loads of pregnant women.

Good luck with your DE appt :)

Hmmmm had a scan of bub yesterday arvo - seems she has just exploded in size!

Not even 2 full weeks ago she was approx weight 5lb 1oz . Now, at 35 wks, her approx weight is 6lb 8oz!! OMG! That's 2.95kgs....already! Her head circumference is still very petite: 6th percentile for her gestational age (35wks), and her abdomen is a whopping <95th percentile (they couldn't even give it a proper number, just <95 eeeek)

I have almost no doubt that they will wanna c-sect me at 38wks (so only 3 wks away eeeeeek), and even my DE said to be prepared if they want to do it at 37 weeks! I'm pretty sure a vaginal delivery is out of my hands now due to my very fast heart rate (resting is 110-120, as it may not be safe to go through a labor with it so elevated), and the estimated projected growth of Pikachu from now....

I have come to terms with the liklihood of a planned caesar - and I am at peace if that's the way it needs to be for my health and of course bubs' too!

I am extremely excited to meet her - yet anxious as heck!

Will keep you all informed about my OB appoint this coming week ahead re: delivery plan.

Wishing everyone all the best with their pregnancies, TTC, labors, and newborns!

Hi everyone,

Sorry I have been MIA, it has been a hectic and eventful week and a day. Thanks for all the well-wishes I spied in the previous posts, and Erin for your text (sorry, long story but essentially no mobile/time til now) - I will reply more thoroughly as soon as I can.

For now though, we are very happy to announce that Alexandra Brookelyn Bradbury was also born on the 31st December 2011!!!!! (CONGRATULATIONS JENNA!!!!!!!!!)
She weighed 4.04 KG and measured 55cm, and arrived by C-section after a very long labour followed by failed assisted delivery. She is incredibly cute, and hubby and I are over the moon (although how she turned out soo adorable we'll never know!).

We've both suffered some set-backs and complications but are finally home (hopefully to stay!) and on the mend =)

I hope everyone else is going well, and I'm looking forward to coming back and catching up on all the goss over the next day or so!!

Wow, such a lot going on in the past couple of days.

Cassie huge congratulations on the birth of your daughter, I can't believe how similar our birth stories ended up being and I really feel for you doing 45 hours of labout, I thought 15 was bad enough! I'm sorry to hear as well that you had complications afterwards and I hope that now you are home with your little one it has all been worth it.

Erin, I was very lucky and my Ob didn't seem too bothered with the growth scans, I was also measuring as above average at my 34 week scan but Chloe was actually only 8lb3 or 3.77kg and that was at 40weeks 2 days, there are so many other factors besides the Diabetes that contribute to the size of bub etc I think sometimes (I am definitely guilty of this) we become so focused on the Diabetes and blame this for everything.

Carlz thats so exciting you have made it past the 35 weeks mark and it doesn't sound like its going to be long until you meet your little girls, good luck, I hope the next few weeks go smoothly.

Also does anyone know how to attach photos to posts, I'm hoping to try and upload a couple of pics of Chloe

thanks

Hi everyone - I haven't been here for ages, so sorry for being late but a huge congratulations to both Cassie and Jenna!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay, how exciting to see a few of us getting to the end of this amazing journey, or maybe the beginning! Thrilled for you both, and thanks for sharing your stories :)

Congratulations Carlz too - I'll be doing (definitely figurative!) cartwheels if I get to 36 weeks too with my twins, I was completely expecting to come here and find you'd had the bubs already but huge congrats for getting this far! And hugs for the discomfort etc etc you mist be in if my experience to this point is anything to go by.

Interesting to see discussion about sugars going high instead of low in early weeks .... I have just been having a similar experience. My insulin needs went up pretty fast earlier than the text books say (18-19 weeks), and then over Christmas break at about 26-28 weeks they've gone DOWN quite significantly now and having heaps of hypos, still trying to work out how low to put my basals - looks like my insulin needs may have halved at some times of day which is amazing. Again, definitely not in the text books but my endo assures me anything is possible and this is just my reality! Interestingly, she also said there's sometimes a concern that sugars going down is an indication that labour may be imminent, but actually there's no evidence for that, yet if it happens endos will often suggest you get checked out. As it happened when I was talking with her about it I had just had a full ultrasound and check with my obstetrician and all fine. Just proved to me what a highly inexact science medicine really is, so much guessing!

My boys are doing very well. Had the third ultrasound last week to check size and was very relieved to discover no diabetes-related problems. The boys are big for twins, on the 70th and 80th percentile, but nothing unusual. My belly is huge, I'm the size I;d be at 40 weeks with one and have 8 weeks to go. I had planned to work til early Feb but my ob has put the kibosh on that and I'm finishing up in a few days now. The oh so attractive cankles that appeared very dramatically on the weekend sealed the deal for me, also diabetes being trickier to manage as I said will be easier if not having to work as well. I'm still getting nausea every morning and vomiting about once a week. My mother-in-law said she had the same, nausea in first and third trimesters, so perhaps they have hubby's genes very strongly!

Have had a few hiccups - a bleed in the middle of the night just before Christmas very scary but didnt turn into anything major thank goodness. And myriad of aches and pains, sometimes so bad they keep me awake all night; each time I fix one with a massage or some exercises to stretch hips for relief or the like, another pops up straight away! The joys, but nothing unusual from talking with other twin mums. I'm looking forward to when the boys are on the outside and other people can help - have completely convinced myself they'll be easier to manage out than in! Generally, diabetes has been the least of my problems, endo very happy and I'm quite astounded really at how 'easy' it's been to maintain a low a1c - it feels like once I made the commitment to do it, things clicked and I'm very focused on it but it's really different to what I had envisaged I'd need to be doing, I'm doing lots of tests but not millions and still able to have some treats and eat normally and have a life.

Good luck to everyone, especially those getting close to the end .... so exciting, I cant wait to see the baby pics!

Ciao everyone.

Postby Cassie_B » Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:04 pm

So I've got a few hours to myself (hubby's on shift armed with bottles and bottles of expressed breast milk - apparently the T1 failed to influence us in this particular regard - yey!) so I thought I'd try and catch up on all I've missed here, and then some much needed sleep. Thanks again everyone for your support throughout - I honestly think I would have been an absolute basket case without your stories and reassurance.

Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME to the newest thread additions Nicola and Claire - most people have answered your earlier questions, but everything both of you are saying sounds similar, and I hope you find by reading this thread that you are definitely not alone - best of luck with all of it, and try to enjoy - as long and torturous and difficult and never-ending as it seems during the pregnancy, those 9 months are almost nothing but a slight blur after delivery! (at least, that's the way it seems to me now...!)

AliG - Yey for 2nd Trimester!!!!!! Hehehe for the possibility of everyone in your family having a name starting with 'A' - I think that's cute (and you could always go with Lexie or something else for short if it bothered you? ;)

Erin - it sounds like you're doing a good job handling the emotions of your news - awesome effort - I know I really struggled emotionally when Alex made that jump from 'average' to 'huge' (by the end of it she actually classed " > 97th %" and that little dot moved even FURTHER away from the end of the bar on the report!). If it makes you feel any better, the C-section part of our delivery was really not that bad (minus the effects of the long labour). Just be prepared to start shivering almost uncontrollably from the epidural/spinal block - for me that was probably the worst part because I'd never heard of it and I was already exhausted and it was almost impossible to stop. Now after speaking to a few people I've heard it's actually quite a common side effect. I have a funny story for you to go with that later, too though =)

Carly and everyone else who's getting close or TTC - GOOD LUCK!! I sincerely hope everything goes smoothly for you all!! If I had more energy I'd try and write up a list of where everyone's at now, but I don't so let's leave that for another day!

Jenna - I finally got time to read your birth story and - Wow. I'm also blown away by how similar our two experiences sound. I'm ecstatic for you that you at least got your spontaneous rupture of membranes! Yey! I'm also really curious about the whole tail-bone thing as they didn't check/find a reason why Alex didn't move down any further after that certain point, and your mention of severe back pain sounds just like mine, and I'd love to pick your brain about it - either on here or via email? Beautiful name for your bub too - and I really think it's kinda sweet that after sharing so much of our journey on here, our girls ended up with the same birthday - thanks once again for all the support and I hope everything goes well for you and the family at home!

Anyway, my birth story is detailed in another thread, but I'll post the relevant bits here too for future reference, and add some things in throughout and at the end which might be a helpful heads up for those who end up in similar situations re pain management and the effects of bub. Sorry if it ends up really long. Here goes.

They induced me 9pm Thursday at 38 weeks with cervitol. I had a completely unfavourable cervix (we're talking like best score of 1 here - bub was well down in pelvis, but cervix fully closed, fully thick, fully back).

I had actually had mild cramping all day, but as far as I'm aware, my contractions started half an hour later. They were intense right from the start, and were accompanied by the most excruciating lower back pain I have ever had. At risk of sounding gross, it was just like that feeling you get the instant before explosive diarrhoea, only it was CONSTANT and a hundred times worse. In fact, it felt like I constantly needed to go to the toilet, but when I tried, sitting was excruciating and nothing happened anyway. I didn't make a fuss, I'm both good and bad with pain at the same time, I'm always afraid I'm over-reacting, so I push through for as long as I possibly can before mentioning what's going on/requesting pain relief.

After I finally mentioned in the morning that these pains had been going on for a while and that I'd had no sleep (and they checked with CTG and confirmed contractions were regular at 4 every 10 mins) there was a shift change and I got a midwife who refused to believe I was in labour (and even removed my heatpacks/looked down on me showering/requesting pain relief) because she i) believed it was too early for contractions given the state of my cervix at the time the cervitol was administered; ii) had 'been doing this a long time' and 'didn't trust' / refused to use the CTG machine; and iii) could 'tell' by my presentation and body language that what I was experiencing was not likely to be anything other than cramps.

She took the tape out (24 hrs later/9pm Friday) and didn't do/all but refused an internal to see how far along things were. Not having done this before and not knowing any different, I tried to persevere and prepare myself for the labour she warned me would eventually come. The next shift change was much the same. This midwife obviously only got handed over the previous nurses opinion, and not that of the 2 before who confirmed contractions with the CTG. When I decided I really wanted pain relief, she suggested a sleeping tablet and when I expressed concern about hypos since the midwives were busy and hubby was being sent home, she convinced me/I decided to bump up my BSL overnight since sleep would be the best thing for me to have on my side when labour 'started'. As a result, I went to bed with a BSL of 11 - for 10 mins. Which makes me feel even more guilty about bub's initial hypoglycaemia, but anyway.

At around 2am, finally in tears, in the shower wearing only a bra (?go figure) I buzzed her back in and declared that the pain was so bad that I actually really needed pain relief and that I was really, really starting to be scared of how I would handle labour/true contractions if those truly were just cramps. She actually replied "Yep, I'm thinking you're probably going to get a bit of a shock tomorrow when they fit you in at the review centre, insert the gel and the contractions start for real" before she headed off to get approval for some meds.

10 mins later she was back and convinced enough by my body language to do an internal and shocked to find I was almost 3cm dialated. 10 mins after that I was down in Birth Suite, 6cm dialated. Lucky the staff in Birth Suite were more on their game. I was attempting vaginal delivery, so tried gas and (after initially refusing, but eventually being so tired and in pain) accepted an epidural. Instant relief. They put me on a syntocinon infusion, and drips for IV glucose/insulin. I got a tiny bit of rest and then laboured for several more hours. Eventually they told me that although my pushing was great, bub was not coming out unassisted. They couldn't/didn't tell me why. They prepped me for surgery just in case, attempted forceps and eventually delivered bub by c-section just before 6pm on Saturday (almost 45 hours later). She was initially hypo but it was easily corrected and she was otherwise fine (initial APGARs of 8 & 9). I ended up with a post-partum haemorrhage >1.5L and severe pain in recovery that is only just starting to really improve due to long labour and them having to push bub back UP to cut her out (ouch!).

So that's pretty much it, but I wanted to share one more experience, on a slightly related-but-unrelated-to-this-thread note, in case it helps prevent someone else ending up in the same situation. PLEASE make sure the midwives etc dealing with you and bub afterwards give you all the information you request - and that it's truly accurate when they do. And no matter how inexperienced you feel, if you think something is not right with you or bub, stick to your guns. Alex ended up with a later episode of hypoglycaemia AFTER her levels had stabilised, and it took me passing on my concern to the DE to get the midwives to finally check it out (she ended up fine after treatment, but still, otherwise my concerns were/would have been ignored). And even worse, we ended up in an ambulance and spending a day and night at the Royal Children's a day after we got home because the meds they put me on for pain relief (which I was maxing out) filtered into the breast milk and caused extreme fatigue (the whole week in recovery) and eventually, episodes of respiratory depression/distress and finally apnoea and considerable cyanosis. She's on the up now, but still, without my paramedic training it could quite easily have been worse, or even worse fatal, and this (the reduced level of alertness/oddly irregular breathing) was something I pointed out concern for to the midwives and paeds doctors for a whole WEEK on the ward. It was continuously brushed off as 'sleepiness'/neurotic new mother syndrome and eventually I (reluctantly and perhaps stupidly) accepted this as the probable truth. The night before we ended up in the ambulance it had occurred to me that her being SO difficult to rouse all the time was very similar to the narcotic ODs we deal with at work. Then I remembered I was on 2 types of opiates - Tramadol AND Codeine. I was concerned, but since nothing had really changed in her presentation from that in the hosp - where they kept telling me she was fine - I simply stopped taking the meds and started feeding her the most RECENT expressed milk rather than the older stuff (she was so out of it all the time she wouldn't stay on the breast and could only just take the bottle) and called the maternity ward in the morning to see what else I would have to do. I was told by the Team Leader there was nothing to do, and that what I was suggesting could not be the problem because they 'didn't give nursing mother's anything that would affect the breastfeeding baby'. I wasn't convinced and debated until she agreed to have the pain specialist call us back, and then did my own research. Within 20 secs of Google I found out that BOTH the drugs they had me on were FDA category C - and that the Tramadol (known to cause severe lethargy) specifically warned NOT TO BREASTFEED whilst taking it. The Codeine is approved for breast-feeding, but comes with an official warning about a rare occurrence in which causes - you guessed it - periods of apnoea, respiratory depression/distress/arrest and cyanosis within the first week of life in nursing newborns born to mothers that metabolise opiates quicker than most (lucky me, right?). Half an hour later (whilst waiting to confirm this with the pain specialist) I was on the phone to the ambulance as Alex's level of consciousness was even more reduced, her breathing was not normal and her mouth and peripheries were turning blue.

She had several periods of apnoea in hospital, but is doing great now and is definitely on the way up!

The worry associated with this new mother thing is hard - like diabetes it doesn't come with a textbook/manual that suits everybody. But I'm quickly learning that, like with our diabetes, us mothers are the ones who know our babies best - even at this very, very early stage. So, please, I hope you never end up in a similar situation, but like with our T1 issues, if you're ever concerned, stand your ground until you get the treatment/answer you're happy with!! Oh, and DON'T take opiates while breast-feeding!

And now, for a happier note - Piccies!!

Born! (and out of theatre).

Hi Everyone,
First of all - Cassie - CONGRATS she is absolutely beautiful!!! That story made me cry. I have had that so many times where they are always right when actually they are wrong! Good for you sticking to your guns and dont feel bad at all about giving up when you have to - its really hard when everyone is telling you you are wrong to convince them. She is gorgeous and please take care of yourself.

Erin - Good luck! Im sure it will all go well and in a few weeks we will see more gorgeous pics

Jenna - Thanks so much for sharing. It sounds like a difficult experience but rewarding at the end.

Ali - Hope is all goes well in trimester 2

Lucia - hang in there. Not long to go now! im sure its all going to be great and good for you keeping your a1c down :)

I am actually back in hospital. Couldnt keep down ice chips which wasnt a great sign. Just saw a copy of my bloods which arent pretty - seriously malnourished and hoping bub will be ok regardless. Struggling to keep my levels normal - they are so all over the place I feel terrible for this poor baby. I hope he/she likes sweet things!! I have tried bolusing 30 mins before - it seems to help but hard when I dont know what I will eat.
Anyway looks like Ill be here for a few days so trying to keep myself occupied!

Good luck everyone :))

Carly - Yaaaaaay! :D I think I said it before, but I'm still so pleased to see that you made it past 35! Woo hoo!

Lucia, I'll be watching with hope to see how you and your wee boys go too. :)

Welcome Nicola and Claire! :)

Lara, oh you poor thing! (((hugs))) If you're bored out of your mind, feel free to email me (jac dot angelbait at gmail dot com) and I'll keep you company online - I'm at home feeling icky this week, so could use some distraction. ;)

Congrats Cassie! :D She's absolutely adorable! :) Well done mum.

Ok on to me - I have another scan tomorrow - Hoping to find out my twosome's genders! Hopefully they cooperate for me. Eeeeeee! So exciting! :D I'm still feeling really sick, even with pills to help. Ick. Such is life, I suppose. I'm slightly less tired with the iron pills though, they're definitely helping. BGLs are looking like a yoyo, not badly but just enough to be annoying. Grrr. After a week of finally having an appetite for the first time since I was about 5 weeks, I'm back to not wanting food again. Ugh. Such a pain. I'm loving seeing everyone's posts though, it's making me feel a ton better! :)

Cassie - gee it really sounds like you have been through a lot in the past 10 days, at least you are through the worst of it and I have no doubt that everytime you pick up Alex it makes everything you have been through worthwhile and by the way she is gorgeous and has such an amazing head of hair :-)

With regards to the issue with the Tail bone I'm going to be scheduled in for a pelvic xray in the next few weeks before my bones etc start returning to their pre pregnancy position to try and identify why Chloe just wouldn't move down and why I had zero urge to push, I'll keep you posted on what I find out - now I look at it from this side its quite entertaining as I have my Ob well and truly puzzled about what happened and I get the impression he isn't the sort of person that likes not having answers at his fingertips!

Quick question - how did you upload the pictures straight onto the forum?

Larap - so sorry you are feeling so bad and are suffering so much from the MS, at least if you are in hospital for a few days they can get your fluids up and get some nourishment into you and try and come up with a solution that you can use going forwards.

Lucia - glad that it sounds like things are going well overall and you are not that far away from meeting your boys either. I also know what you mean about the cankles, I had horrendous cankles and couldn't wear anything but thongs from week 32, my feet are only just starting to go down now, I was very excited this morning when I actually identified my right ankle underneath all of the swelling :-)

Jac its so exciting when you can find out the genders of the bubs, I hope the scan goes well for you

Thanks everyone =)

Jenna, I opened a (free) account with photobucket, uploaded pics to there from the PC and then copy-pasted the IMG code into the body of the message in the forum. If you have them on another website/have the http address for them, you should be able to do the same thing from there or by pushing the Img button under the subject line when you create a post here, and inserting the url between the [ img ] [ /img ].... I think!
