This is a secure and safe place for people to bitch, moan, argue, or rejoice (yes, really) about having Type 1 Diabetes. If something has inspired you or enraged you, here's your opportunity to let everyone know.
I moved to Goulburn recently and originally saw a woman GP, who then left and went to another town, so I saw another GP the other day. He asked me some general questions and then asked 'how much insulin do you take a day?" I answered that it depends on what I eat. He smiled, and said 'I understand perfectly!" At last, a GP I don't have to educate!
I bet that that GP has a close connection with someone with T1D - maybe a good friend, sibling, partner, or possibly even himself. Otherwise they just don't get it. People don't. Even the health professions. Or maybe even especially the health professions.........
Yay, that must be a first! That question usually annoys me because most GPs look at me like I'm an idiot when I say, I don't know it depends what I eat!
The how much Insulin a day question is probably based on older methods of 2 injections a day and BGLs regulated by food intake/exercise, most commonly used now with T2 on Insulin.
It is most likely the method taught to GPs, I presume and the idea of counting carbs and injecting for food intake I suspect is foreign to most, therefore would not occur that insulin would or could vary through out the day.
To say he understands is enlightening and comforting as well I imagine.
TopCat - even medical students currently in university are being told incorrect stuff about diabetes manegement (a good family friend of ours is doing 3rd yr now) - i've explained that in the past
Good to hear Jane.
We were umming and ahhing about Bowral, and found theres a pretty good hospital there and various medical practitioners who spend most of their weekends in the area so base themselves there on Mondays or Fridays to maximise their stays

Yep. DH has just got a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon in Bowral to get his hand operated on. Good medicos in Canberra, too - I'm going to see one on Friday. The only problem with Canberra is finding your way around!
That is my favourite Dr question as well so glad to find out there is atleast 1 GP out there with a diabetes brain Its probably only 8 hours to drive to Goulburn for me
Hmm maybe too far??? ha ha!
