Paul Dillon doing workshops to get info from us on recreational drugs and their effect on diabetes. The Cure – Len Harrison & Margo Honeyman brought us up to speed on all the cure research going on at the moment. Lots of different workshops where we sat and gas-bagged forever (relationships, eating disorders, Fit for Life etc) Tammy van Wisse’s stories of her epic swims (and her smile!) “The positivity” “The Karma was really great.”
Hi guys. After attending ISYAD 99, I have discovered that I have always, in the background of my mind, resented people not understanding that Diabetes is a way of life. You either live with it or suffer the consequences. Most people seem to think that getting Diabetes is a commuted death sentence instead of a disease we can all live with fairly easily. It was very good to just spend time with people who understand the shit that goes down, and that we all have to deal with on a regular basis. That, and make jokes that only someone that has Diabetes would find funny - everyone else that I know seems to find them kinda morbid. Qapla! Haggis McHaggis < haggismchaggis@hotmail.com > Congratulations on the success of ISYAD. I had a wonderful day. It is funny that sometimes we may think we know all there is to know about Diabetes & then you learn that little bit more. Although I must say, the highlight for me is always meeting other people & hearing their stories. Cheers Susan Your hard work was rewarded with another sensational ISYAD!!!! Once again, maybe even more so this year, I really felt afterwards so motivated and inspired to beat this problem and much less isolated. It wasn't until Katie said that until 2 years ago she couldn't even say the word 'Diabetes' that I realised I was not alone in this! I feel like I have a lot more confidence now to talk to other people about this issue and realise that no-one will help me to manage Diabetes better unless I tell them about what's going on. Since ISYAD I have been talking heaps to everyone about the conference and what I learnt and have not been feeling embarrassed or ashamed of this problem, like I have done in the past. I'm going to put together an 'information kit' for my family because it's about time they wised up and understood what it is that I have to go through every day. One of the things I will include is the 'do's and don'ts for people who love other people who have Diabetes' from yada yada. Also, there is a wealth of information out there which can really help and I felt very encouraged to take the problem into my own hands, instead of relying on the 3 monthly visit to the endo which is not as useful as I always thought. I feel very empowered! Helen < hknight@boroondara.vic.gov.au > |
